This one is for the ladies. Guys, just cover your eyes unless you’re really comfortable with nature, and may want to pass this info along to your American girlfriend.
As some of you may have noticed, tampons are now about $10 a pack. So it’s about time to start looking into some alternatives.
Reusable
You can buy menstrual cups online. Some of them will last for years and years. However, if you don’t want to wear a cup, you may want to consider sea sponge.
Sea sponge/natural sponge can be bought in any pharmacy’s baby section. Just cut it into pieces that will fit, and boil them or give them a good soak in a surgical grade disinfectant before using them the first time.
Be mindful that sponges will hold onto microbes if you let them. Keep them clean between uses by flushing them out with warm water and antimicrobial soap/cleanser. Rotate them each night, letting the one from the day before dry while you’re using the next one.
Roll Your Own
Cotton cosmetic discs can be rolled into tampons. They just won’t have a string. Use three rolled tightly together for heavy days, and fewer for lighter days.
If you must have a string, use gauze. You can get sanitary gauze at the pharmacy. One layer of it can be made into a kind of a pocket for the body of the tampon, and the slack will hang out as if it was a string.
Caution
Remember, even with home made tampons, and even if you’ve been very clean, there is a risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). So if you start to smell funky or itch, or have strange pains, go see your gynecologist. Never ever leave anything inside your vagina for more than 2 hours. When you can, give yourself a break too…take a book to the bathroom, and just let it all hang out for awhile. Also, keep the external parts clean as well. You can pick things up along the way, that do not belong inside your body.
